Jacksonville couple killed in motorcycle crash while deployed in Japan

Maribel Lebron and Miguel Fuentes said their son, an airman from Jacksonville, lived life to fullest.

The body of their son, Gabriel Fuentes-Lebron, was brought back home to Jacksonville on Tuesday.

Fuentes-Lebron was killed in a motorcycle accident while stationed in Okinawa, Japan, earlier this month.

“I said to him, 'I love you.' He answered, 'I love you, momma. I love you, too,'" Fuentes-Lebron’s mother Mirabel Lebron said. "That was the last words that we talked."

She said she learned about the crash on Facebook.

“I started shaking,” Lebron said.

She said reality hit her when she looked outside her door May 18.

“When I looked outside, I saw the Air Force car," Lebron said. "I said, ‘OK, this is not a movie. This is true.’”

“When she called me I said, ‘Yea, I know about the accident,’" Fuentes-Lebron's father Miguel Fuentes said. "And she said, 'No. He passed.'”

Fuentes-Lebron's girlfriend, Navy sailor Savannah Cagle, was also killed in the crash. She was also stationed in Japan, Fuentes-Lebron's parents said.

His family said the two were magnetic.

“I’m happy for him because some people never in their life know true love," Lebron said. "And my son knows true love."

His family said the two were planning to surprise their loved ones at a high school graduation last week and Fuentes-Lebron was planning to propose to Cagle.

Family and friends remembered the couple at a celebration of life Wednesday night.

Fuentes-Lebron's family said they’ll never forget his sense of humor and his smile.
