Jacksonville firefighter loses 2 pets, home in fire after Irma

A Jacksonville firefighter lost his home and two dogs in a fire while he was working extra shifts after Hurricane Irma.

Jacob Tomlinson says the call about the fire came in at his fire station while he was working his fifth 24-hour shift because of Irma.

His rescue crew responded to his Mandarin home.

“It wasn’t until I saw the front door was open and saw how much smoke was coming out that I realized the extent of the fire,” he said.

The entire home except the garage was charred.

He says the fire happened right as his power was restored a few days after Hurricane Irma.

His wife and two 15-month-old twin girls were not home when the fire started.

His two dogs that were like family, Jack and Fin, were killed in the fire.

The community has stepped up to help the family after the fire.

A campaign online has raised just under $30,000.

There will also be an event to raise money for the family this Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to just after midnight at Atlantic Beach Brewing Company.
