Jacksonville Humane Society, Alachua County Humane Society fly 100 cats to Delaware

On Monday, 100 cats flew from Cecil Airport to Brandywine Valley, Delaware.

Fifty of the cats were evacuated from the Jacksonville Humane Society to make room for felines left without a home by Hurricane Michael.

Executive Director, Denise Deisler said, “We have yet to know exactly the magnitude of the impact to animals, but it’s best to be prepared.”

An additional 50 cats were taken from the Alachua County Humane Society.

Deisler explained they’re emptying the shelters in waves to assist more cats in the Panhandle.

She described, “The first wave getting the shelters in immediately impacted areas emptied before the storm and now neighboring shelters so we can be prepared for whatever that response needs to be.”

According to Deisler it’s a process they learned the importance of locally during Hurricanes Matthew and Irma.

Jaguars’ player Malik Jackson paid for the flight through the ‘Malik’s Gifts Foundation’.

The Jacksonville Humane Society said they’re working to evacuate dogs so they can also accept K-9s from the devastated areas.

They’re asking for the community to help by adopting or fostering animals.
