Jacksonville nurse recalls attempts to rescue driver of wrong-way crash

A local nurse describes her desperate attempts to rescue the driver of a burning Jeep.

She was driving home across the Hart Bridge Sunday night when the car in front of her was hit by a wrong-way driver.

FHP says the woman driving the Jeep going the wrong way was Kelsey Nalette, who died at the scene.

The other person was badly injured.

Tanasea Costa  was driving home when a driver heading the wrong direction on the Hart Bridge smashed into the vehicle  in front of her.

Costa swerved to avoid the wreck, then immediately got out and ran towards the crash.

Flames quickly spread to the driver’s side of the Jeep, the heat, keeping Costa from being able to get close.

Costa then saw the driver of the other vehicle escape his burning car.

“He literally fell onto the pavement out of that burning vehicle.”

Costa stayed with the injured man, keeping him conscious until help arrived.

It was the second wrong-way crash on the bridge in a matter of days.

Now, Costa is reliving the horrifying scene, and prays for the families.

“I pray for the families and all those that were involved and you know that I did what I could.”
