Jacksonville police: Man's body pulled from Trout River

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a man's body was pulled from the Trout River on Wednesday afternoon

Around 4 p.m., police said the 54-year-old man was hanging out with friends under the Trout River bridge on Main Street when he decided to go swimming and swam away from the shore.

A witness tells Action News Jax that the man said he was going to jump into the Trout River to swim out to a boat.

"There was a guy out here and he was talking about swimming out to a boat that's out there in the water. We tried to talk him out of it, he wasn't going to make it, and he did it anyway," Carolina Burroughs said.

Witnesses told police that the man began to struggle in the water and became motionless. Another witness tried to swim out to the man to save him, but was unable to reach him.

The current started to carry the man away, and JSO and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded. A JFRD boat found the man and pulled him from the water and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No foul play is suspected, police said.
