Suspect killed in second Jacksonville officer-involved shooting in 24 hours

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is working an officer-involved shooting in the 11000 block of Old St. Augustine Road.

JSO said that no officers were injured, but the suspect is dead.

In the media briefing early Thursday morning, JSO said that around 9 p.m. a female employee of Bite Squad was making a food delivery to an apartment complex in the Mandarin neighborhood when she was confronted by a white male with a hand gun.

The suspect demanded money, which she gave him, JSO said.

The victim then flagged down an off duty police officer at a nearby Walmart, giving the description of the suspect to the officer who dispatched the information to JSO.

Around 9:30 p.m. an officer on duty saw a man matching the description of the suspect as he was driving in to the St. Augustine apartment complex, so he stopped his vehicle to make contact.

The suspect turned to run and then raised a silver handgun at the officer, JSO said.

The officer fired two shots and the suspect ran off, according to JSO.

JSO said the officer then called for assistance and reported the shooting.

Several minutes later residents called 911 and reported a man laying in the breezeway with a gun, and it was determined to be the same male, according to JSO.

The officer and a trained ICU nurse who lived in the complex performed CPR until the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived, but the suspect died JSO said.

According to JSO, the officer involved in the shooting did not have a body camera and was placed on administrative leave per policy.

JSO said the investigation is ongoing and they are searching for surveillance video from the areas of the robbery and shooting.

This is the second officer-involved shooting in 24 hours when a man was killed after a struggle with an officer earlier in the day Wednesday.
