Jacksonville residents rally after Vernell Bing Jr. ruling

Dozens gathered in front of the Duval County Courthouse demanding justice for a father who was shot and killed by a JSO officer Wednesday night.

The rally comes just days after the State Attorney’s Office ruled the 2016 shooting of Vernell Bing Jr. was justified.

This week, the State Attorney’s Office released dash cam video from one of the JSO cruisers involved in the May 2016 pursuit – something State Attorney Melissa Nelson’s Office has been reviewing for more than a year.

The investigation determined Bing was not shot multiple times, that he was not shot in the back, and he was not on the ground when he was shot, debunking claims by some witnesses.

But demonstrators say they are not happy with the office’s conclusion.

“When is it ever going to be enough? When does it stop? When do we hold the people that we elected accountable?” says Denise Hunt, with the Jacksonville Progressive Coalition.

“She lied to us, she lied to us. She said I’m going to prosecute all criminals, that’s what she said. But did she prosecute these criminals?” says another demonstrator.

Family members of Keegan Roberts are also asking for justice after he was shot and killed in his driveway by his neighbor. The State Attorney’s Office said there’s not enough evidence to make an arrest.
