Jacksonville woman carjacked at gunpoint while taking out trash

The Jacksonville woman said she drove her car to the dumpster and left it running when she got out to throw away the trash. When she turned back around, Hurt said she was staring down the barrel of a gun.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville woman said she was carjacked at gunpoint while taking out the trash Friday.

Dori Hurt said the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. at the Hunters Way Apartments in Mandarin.

She said she drove her car to the dumpster and left it running when she got out to throw away the trash. When she turned back around, Hurt said she was staring down the barrel of a gun.

“I thought I was going to die. I thought he was going to kill me,” Hurt said. She said the suspects were five to six teenagers wearing hoodies.

Using the vehicle’s tracking device system, the ignition was killed. The car was recovered in less than two minutes from Hurt’s complex after two hours, but the suspects were gone.

“They ended up walking off with my phone and wallet,” Hurt said. “They threw my keys in the grass and took off.”

Hurt said her sense of security has been shattered. Now, she has a warning for others.“Definitely pay attention. Don't take your trash out at night,” Hurt suggested.

Despite what happened, Hurt said she is willing to forgive those involved. “They didn't kill me, so I'm thankful because they could've,” Hurt said. “Maybe it was meant to be a life lesson for them and if it could prevent them from ruining their lives in the future then I'll absolutely forgive.”

Hurt said police gathered DNA swabs from the vehicle. No arrests have been made.
