Pelican Plaza at Hanna Park sits on some pretty prime oceanfront real estate but it’s pretty clear the pavilion has fallen into disrepair.
Action News found missing tiles, pillars with jagged edges and a pavilion with holes in the roof. A spokesperson for JaxParks told Action News the plaza is supposed to be off-limits until fixes can be made. But we found that a barrier that was supposed to be there had been removed.
Park users also reported the nearby bathrooms, which are open to the public, need some work.
“I didn't want to take off my shoes,” said Merrill Fleming, who uses the park. “It's not really beach-friendly I don't think.”
JaxParks said it is looking at hiring a contractor who can use better equipment to clean the bathrooms. The department is hopeful that funding for improvements at the park will be included in the city’s Capital Improvement Plan. The mayor has slated $3 million for possible improvements at parks citywide, and another $500,000 for the Hanna Park Splash Pad. The City Council would have to approve the plans.
