Jazzercise class in Fernandina Beach lets mothers get fit with their babies

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — For many new mothers, finding time to take a workout class, stay in shape and find child care for their babies can be difficult.

A Jazzercise studio in Fernandina Beach is catering to those women. It is launching classes in which mothers can work out and wear their babies at the same time.

Heather Wolff said the class is a big help for busy mothers.

“It’s nice to be able to have them with me at all times, and be able to still work out as a mom and not have to worry where am I going to  have to put my kids,” said Wolff.

Instructor Nicki Snyder said it’s a low-intensity class where participants can use almost any baby carrier they choose.

“With the carriers on, it enables you to keep your chest open. Your posture’s much better and you’re going to end up working muscles you probably wouldn’t normally work,” said Snyder.

“She was like, ‘Are you going to wear me?’ She was so excited to do it with me because normally she’s in child care and she watches from afar,” said Anne Homan, who is pregnant and has a young daughter.

Snyder said safety is most important, so instructors will work with mothers to make sure they’re comfortable before they start.

Synder said the first class is free.

The baby-wearing fitness class will be offered at 6 p.m. Friday at the Jazzercise Fernandina Beach fitness center.
