Joleen Cummings' accused killer waives court appearance in Nassau County

STORY: Joleen Cummings' coworker charged with first-degree murder

The woman who deputies said is responsible for the death of Joleen Cummings did not appear in court Thursday in Nassau County.

Kessler's defense entered a not guilty plea on her behalf.

Public Defender Charlie Cofer said part of the reason her appearance was waived was transportation issues, stating Kessler is being held in a jail in Duval County.

Kessler's next court date is Sept. 20.

Cummings went missing on Mother's Day, May 13, the day after she worked at Tangles Hair Salon.

Police charged her coworker Kimberly Kessler with her murder in early September following new evidence found connected to the investigation.

The state of Florida is not disclosing what evidence it has as they attempt to convict Kessler.

Although Cummings' body has not been discovered, prosecutors said the death penalty is not "off the table."

State Attorney Melissa Nelson said there is a 45-day period to enter a notice of intent if they decide to seek the death penalty for Kessler.
