JSO: 2-year-old girl shot in the foot off East 44th Street

Police are investigating what led up to a 2-year-old being shot in the foot in a Panama Park home on Friday night.

Neighbor Renee Scantling said it was very unusual to see police investigating a child shot on their street.

“Especially in our neighborhood because, normally, we’re very quiet,” said Scantling. “It’s a very quiet neighborhood.”

Investigators told Action News Jax the child’s twin sister, a 6-year-old boy and three adults were in the house at the time.

They say the adults heard the gun go off in the front bedroom of the house, and ran in to find the 2-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot.

A short time later, they said the child’s parents arrived and took the girl to UF Health. The hospital staff called police at about 9:10 p.m.

Action News Jax reporter Ryan Nelson went to the house hoping to learn more about what happened, but no one came to the door.

This is the second 2-year-old has been shot in Jacksonville in 2019.

We told you when two-year-old Jaden Piedra was shot and killed in February by an unsecured gun.

Action News Jax was the only station to speak to Piedra’s mother, Donna Crump-Piedra, after the shooting.

She and her boyfriend, Lephabion Griggs, have since been arrested and charged with culpable negligence.

Police told Action News Jax on Friday night they didn’t know whom the gun belonged to, as of their initial investigation.

We’re calling police to learn if they’ve determined who owned the gun, who pulled the trigger and if anyone will be facing charges.
