The man fatally shot by a JSO officer has been identified as Daniel Edward Blyler, 44.

Director of Investigations Ron Lendvay said Saturday that the officer fired 13 rounds when Blyler grabbed the handle of his 9 mm gun.

Blyler's weapon had a live round in the chamber and multiple bullets in the magazine, according to Lendvay.

JSO also identified the officer who shot Blyler as L. K. Johnson, a traffic officer who's been with the department for just under 16 years.

Lendvay said this is Johnson's second officer-involved shooting. He has been placed on administrative leave per normal protocol.

The incident began when police got a call from a manager of Vic's Sandwich Shop on Edgewood Friday afternoon about an intoxicated individual.

The workers told the 911 operator that they were concerned about the man driving.

An officer was dispatched and while on the way he received information that the man had a gun in a holster on his hip.

The manager told the responding officer that the man backed his truck into a parking space near the restaurant.

The officer parked his car in an adjacent lot and walked over to talk to the man, police said.

At some point, the man reached for his gun, police said.

The officer shot the man. Fire rescue was not able to save him at the scene.

Officials said multiple people saw the man's gun. Witnesses also saw him reach for the gun when the officer tried to talk to him, officials said.
