Foul play suspected in woman's death at apartments near UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating foul play in the shooting death of a woman on the Southside.

JSO responded to reports of a shooting at the Retreat at St. Johns apartment complex near University of North Florida Monday afternoon.

Officers found an unresponsive woman in her mid-50s.

Jacksonville Fire & Rescue pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Police say the woman’s ex-boyfriend went to her apartment to help her move.

Investigators say he knocked on the door and became concerned when she did not answer.

He tried the door and noticed it was unlocked, police say.

When the ex-boyfriend came inside the apartment, he found the woman and called police.

Police say they do not know how many gunshot wounds the victim had.

JSO said investigators originally did not suspect foul play in the woman's death.

However, homicide investigators now believe foul play is involved.

Action News learned the apartment complex sent a letter to residents, informing them of the incident.

JSO told the complex, according to the letter, the incident is "contained to the apartment" and people shouldn't be worried.
