JSO: Woman kidnapped as infant had fake birth documents

An 18-year-old who was kidnapped from a Jacksonville hospital as an infant in 1998 may have been suspicious about her true identity several months ago.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Gloria Williams kidnapped Kamiyah Mobley at birth and raised her as her own daughter under the name Alexis Manigo.

Gloria Williams was arrested on Friday and remains in jail in Colleton County, South Carolina.

Gloria Williams is waiting to be brought back to Duval County on kidnapping charges.

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams revealed on Monday that Manigo had a fraudulent Social Security card and birth certificate.

Sheriff Williams said the fake documents began to raise questions as Manigo began to look for work.

“We’re not sure how much she knew or what she knew, or how much she was told. But we believe that there was a conversation at some point with some explanation about why all her birth documents were fraudulent,” said Sheriff Williams.

Forms to enroll in Manigo’s school district in Colleton County show that a birth certificate and Social Security card are optional.

“It was a necessary part in the continuing effort to conceal this child’s identity,” said Action News Jax Law and Safety Expert Dale Carson.

Judging by Manigo’s social media posts, she wants to continue going by the name she was raised with, not by Kamiyah Mobley.

“She would adopt the original birth certificate, original Social Security number – if there were one – and she would file with the court saying, ‘I want to change my name to my current name, which I’ve used for many years,’” said Carson.

Manigo continues to defend the woman who raised her on social media.
