Crew checks lighting after attack at Julington Creek Plantation Park

County crews were at Julington Creek Plantation Park Thursday looking at lights on the path leading to the bathroom.

Concern among park users have been mounting since Tuesday, when a woman was attacked while walking out of the bathroom. Action News Jax spoke exclusively with the victim, who said she was beaten over the head by a man in a black hoodie.

Regulars at the park say they’ve noticed the lack of lighting by the bathroom before. While checking lighting at the park Thursday, county crews focused on "dangerous" areas. According to the county, while they take the concerns very seriously they don’t know that additional lighting is the answer.

The county currently relies on light from other buildings and fixtures to illuminate the bathroom area, but when we looked at the scene Wednesday night the area was pitch black. Parents at the park say it’s a safety concern that needs to be taken care of.

Park user Alana Muse says, “It is really dark, especially when I’m coming up from the back of the field toward the bathroom area and I’m running towards the bathroom. I usually have my phone out using the flashlight.”

The county says a decision about additional lighting will come at a later date.
