King's Academy student's science project aids lionfish research



ROYAL PALM BEACH - A sixth grader’s science project at King’s Academy is helping scientists study and fight the invasive lionfish.

Lauren Arrington’s science fair project focused on understanding the salinity limit lionfish can tolerate.

Arrington had seen the work of North Carolina State University scientist Craig Layman, who was researching Lionfish in the Loxahatchee River with his graduate students.

Arrington shared her results, which looked at how far into brackish and eventually fresh water Lionfish could survive, with Layman.

The North Carolina scientist then took her results and expanded upon them with additional research before posting all the findings in the Environmental Biology of Fishes.
