Deadly officer-involved shooting at Jacksonville motel, JSO says

A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the shooting happened at the Motel 6 located at 812 Dunn Avenue.

The Sheriff's Office said no officer was injured in the shooting.

Witnesses tell Action News Jax  there were several shots fired.

The Sheriff's Office said a field training officer and a recruit were patrolling the area for suspicious activity, when the officer observed a red Chevrolet Cruz backed into a parking spot with the trunk open. The officer then determined the tag on the car was actually assigned to a different car reported stolen Dec. 7, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said a woman came out of the motel and approached the officers. According the Sheriff's Office the woman said the car belonged to her boyfriend.

Officers proceeded to handcuff the woman because the officers believed the woman may have been involved in the potential felony vehicle theft, and they wanted to detain her for safety reasons, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said the woman resisted arrest both physically and verbally.

A man then walked out of the hotel and approached the officers, according to JSO.

The Sheriff's Office said the man had a bag and an item in his hand that the field training officer yelled numerous times for the man to drop.

The man did not comply and proceeded to approach the officers, according to JSO. Authorities said the man had a gun.

JSO said there was a struggle over the gun and evidence at the scene indicts the man fired at least one time at the officer.

The Sheriff's Office said the officer fired his gun multiple times hitting the suspect. The man died at the scene according to JSO.

Action News Jax reporter Courtney Cole spoke to Motel patrons who said they have not been allowed to leave the area or return to their rooms while the area is still an active investigation.
