Las Vegas shooting: Officer body camera videos can be used as teaching tool later

Body camera videos can help show exactly what is happening in a situation like the shooting in Las Vegas that claimed the lives of 58 people.

Action News Jax crime and safety expert Ken Jefferson said those videos can be used as teaching tools later.

“This shows you how effective a body cam can be and (can) save lives in the future,” Jefferson said.

The footage shows officers trying to clear an area as they use a concrete wall for cover.

In the footage, the officers already know the gunman is shooting from the Mandalay Bay. Their priority was to stay safe and get people out of harm's way.

Jefferson said police are limited on the ground, since they do not carry high-powered weapons

“Most officers have a handgun and a shotgun opposed to a high-powered rifle,” Jefferson said.

Stephen Paddock shot from his hotel window for about 10 minutes, authorities said.

Seventy-two minutes after the shooting began, police were able to breach his door. Paddock had committed suicide inside.

Around him, police found a number of high-powered weapons and ammunition.

Jefferson said the body camera footage that will come from officers on the ground and in the shooter’s hotel room will be used as a training tools for years to come.
