Jacksonville-area counties seeing an increase in flu activity

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The flu season is getting an early start, right before the holiday season.

Flu season usually peaks between December and February but local counties are already seeing flu activity cases.

Despite this year's vaccine not being as effective, doctors said flu shots are still the way to go to protect yourself.

Flu activity is increasing in Nassau, Duval, Clay, St. Johns and Columbia counties.

St. Johns County reported one to two outbreaks in the last few weeks.

The state could not specify exactly where the cases were reported, but a report stated it was at schools or adult care facilities.

Local doctors told Action News Jax flu activity is unpredictable and people should get vaccinated, especially the elderly and children.

You should also wash your hands to prevent the spread of germs and make sure you stay home if you are sick.

Florida Blue is offering free flu shots Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Town Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
