Local parents concerned over violence in schools

STORY: Westside high school student tased and arrested after witnessing bus stop shooting

Some local parents said they’re upset about violent fights at local schools.

Parents said there were violent fights at Baldwin Middle Senior High School. Cellphone video shows a student repeatedly punching another student.

As the kid tries to hide under a cafeteria table, students are heard laughing.

Seconds later someone, who appears to be an adult, tries to break it up, but the student doesn't stop fighting.

Parents sent us another cellphone video of a group of girls punching another girl to the ground.

The school district sent us this statement:

Physical violence and altercations are unacceptable, and students who violate the Code of Conduct are disciplined accordingly.

While we don’t address specific fights to protect the confidentiality and reputations of our students, school administration is aware of confrontations that occur on our campuses.

All such confrontations are addressed appropriately and with consideration to interests of all students involved.

Discipline should be expected, but more importantly, students will have the opportunity to address underlying causes for this type of behavior and continue to grow into productive citizens.

We do encourage concerned parents to become involved in school communities.

Productive dialog with school administration is the first step.

Deeper involvement with PTA, school advisory committees and volunteerism are also effective ways to help all schools build and maintain a positive, achievement-oriented environment for the benefit of all students.
