Major Irma debris collection begins in Jacksonville

Hurricane Irma storm debris pickup officially gets underway Monday morning in Jacksonville, but there are a few things you need to know before the haulers pull up to your home.

There are certain guidelines residents need to know - including not placing materials under trees – as the city begins to clean up the hardest hit areas first.

Remember, only bags and containers of yard debris will only be collected during normal yard waste pickup.

As for all the loose materials, leave it piled up on the curb and be sure to place debris at least three feet away from utility boxes and poles, mailboxes, fire hydrants, or any other obstacles.

Keep in mind items such as leaves, pine needles, branches and limbs must be separate from construction debris and other waste; not doing so could stop collection work in your area.

Last week, Action News Jax spoke with Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry about the efforts as he pitched in on some of the early cleanup work.

“Cleanup and rebuilding is the next effort. We have an aggressive plan to get this city to clean up. With Matthew it was about 700,000 cubic yards and we’re estimating to be 900,000 to 1 million on this,” said Curry.

Last week the mayor said there is no estimates yet in terms of clean-up costs, but in the end it will me more than Matthew last year.
