Man on narcotics carjacks woman in St. Johns County, crashes car in Nassau County

CALLAHAN, Fla. — Deputies say a man carjacked a woman and led them on a chase through three different counties.

Stephen Theberge, 30, was arrested in Callahan, where he crashed the car on U.S. 1 Monday afternoon.

“A man running through the parking lot in his underwear and he jumped in my car,” said Shannon Dugger, a victim.

It was a wild ride that started about 60 miles away in St. Johns County. Deputies say Theberge tried carjacking a woman in the St. Augustine Outlet Mall parking lot.

“He was at my window just screaming at me to give him my car,” said the woman, who didn’t hesitate. “I just gave him what I had."

Deputies said Theberge took off on Interstate 95 toward Duval County, driving recklessly, speeding and swerving.  Theberge crashed along U.S. 1 in Callahan in Nassau County, and deputies say he jumped out and tried to carjack the man behind him. That’s when they say he then ran across the road and tried again.

“All of a sudden I see this little skinny white boy running toward me like he was in his underwear,” said Susan Rewis, who didn’t let that happen. “He looked me in the eye and says, 'I need a car.' I said, 'You aren’t getting mine.'”

Rewis put up a fight.

“He grabbed me on my arms and was trying to push me out of the way,” Rewis said.

Rewis said Thaberge gave up and tried to take off in Dugger’s car.

“We come running out and he hurried up and jumped out the passenger’s side and took off running,” Dugger said.

Deputies say Theberge took Dugger’s flashlight and ran about a block away and used it to break into a home.

“It’s crazy, something you don’t expect to happen,” Dugger said.

Deputies also say Theberge was under the influence of narcotics.

As of late Tuesday night, Theberge was still in the Nassau County Jail on bond of $206,514.
