Man with Jacksonville ties accused of fighting for ISIS

A man with Jacksonville ties is being accused of fighting for the terrorist group ISIS in Syria, according to The Guardian and other news outlets.

The Guardian reported that 46-year old Kary Kleman was detained by Turkish police as he crossed over from Syria last week.

Kleman lived in Jacksonville for years. Neighbors of his family who still live locally say he moved to the Middle East years ago.

They say the U.S. State Department had monitored Kleman’s activity in the Middle East previously.

“They were examining some of his travels,” said neighbor Paul Hazlett. “They weren’t looking for him, or anything specific.”

Kleman’s family told The Guardian that he didn’t join ISIS.

The news outlet reported that Kleman’s family said he had been trying to make his way to the American Embassy in Istanbul so he could return to the United States.
