Marco Rubio looking for gun control proposal

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is looking for proposals for gun control.

Action News Jax Kaitlyn Chana spoke Thursday morning with Rubio about the mass shooting in Orlando.

Rubio explains the gun proposals that were presented to Congress Monday might sound good on paper, but they’re not practical. He said it’s not a topic about gun control, instead it’s about keeping the guns out of the hands of terrorists.

Rubio used the Orlando shooter, Omar Mateen, as an example. He said since Mateen had been looked at and was cleared from the terrorist watch list, under the recent proposals it would not have prevented him from buying guns or alerting officials about his purchases.

“I’m looking for proposals that would allow us to re-look at the way we’re investigating terrorism in this country and number two also on the list proposals that say you’ve been on the list for a period of time who should be notified? Do they have enough time to ensure this individual isn’t up to something,” Rubio.

Rubio said the government is known for making mistakes. He said if someone ends up on a terrorist watch list and they don’t belong on it, there should be a way to clear their name.
