Memorial Day to be hottest day of year so far

2:08 p.m. UPDATE: It officially hit 100 degrees at JIA around 2 p.m. Monday, breaking the old daily record of 98 degrees from 1989. This ties the all-time May high temp. record of 100 set on May 13, 1967.

If you plan to be outdoors for an extended period of time, be sure to drink plenty of clear liquids and reapply sunscreen often.

All indications are Memorial Day will be the hottest day of the year thus far and hotter than any day last year.

We are going to challenge the record high of 98 degrees set in 1989. The forecast high is 99 degrees for Jacksonville International Airport.

The heat, combined with a lack of rainfall, is going to heighten our wildfire risk throughout the week.

A signal next Saturday has been showing a little rain now for awhile, but it doesn’t look like a lot. The Yellow Bluff fire that caused a 20-hour closure of I-95 at the end of last week, grew to more than 600 acres over the weekend.  By Sunday evening, the fire was 65% contained and only light smoke was in the area east of I-95 near Pecan Park Road.
