Middleburg man struck, killed trying to cross Blanding Blvd.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A 77-year-old man was killed when he was struck trying to cross a street in Middleburg Tuesday morning.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck that hit him did stop and Florida Highway Patrol had roads closed for nearly three hours at the intersection of Blanding Boulevard and Palmetto Street.

Dave Loving has been in business at Clay County Transmission for 17 years, and in that time he’s seen a lot of crashes at the busy  intersection of Palmetto Street and Blanding Boulevard.

“We see quite a few of them here; seems like people try to make that last-second left turn at the yellow light and they get clipped a lot,” said Loving.

Surveillance video obtained by Action News Jax shows the man running on the sidewalk along Blanding Boulevard, but we stopped the video right before the man was struck.

It happened at 6:17 a.m. while it was still dark outside.

A Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck attempted to turn right while traveling on Blanding Boulevard and it hit the man in the crosswalk.

The truck pulls over at the BP gas station and what you can’t see in the surveillance video is the driver of the truck running to check on the victim.

Loving says intersection is dangerous, just this year alone he’s counted at least six accidents right in front of his businesses and he says the major reasons is speed.

"It seems like they don't slow down going 45 mph to 35 mph. It seems like they go 35 to 55 and there's a lot of accidents," he said.   
 
He said his heart goes out to the victim's family.

“It’s unfortunate, you know, and we hate to see that... but it happens a lot,” said Loving.
