Mother, son recovering as family plans 2 funerals for children killed in Brunswick RV fire

A mother and her son are recovering from severe burns as their family plans funerals for two small children killed in an RV fire in Brunswick.

Three children and their parents were inside an RV when it caught fire and exploded on Wednesday.

Blayden, 3, and his 4-month-old sister Tally were killed in the fire.

Brighton, the couple's middle child, was taken to a burn unit in Boston for treatment. He's already had surgery for skin grafts on his leg, the family's GoFundMe page said.

The children’s aunt spoke to Action News Jax on Sunday.

Rosa Melo asked us not to show her face on camera because she was so emotional.

Melo said family members have been visiting the child's mom, Chassity, in Gainesville, where she is recovering from severe burns.

"She's stable. They did her surgery yesterday," Melo said. "She did lose some blood but she's OK and they wanted to just do her arm and her shoulder with the skin grafts but they were able to get everything done, thank God, so we don't have to worry about more surgeries."

Melo said her brother, Brighton's father, is on his way to Boston to be with his little boy.

"When we were talking to him before he left Gainesville he would wiggle and stuff so the nurses said that he could hear us," Melo said. "I don't want him to be scared and I think that's comforting when he could hear Michael that his daddy's there."

Melo said her brother and sister-in-law have been through so much.

She said their home caught fire months ago, which is why they had to move into the RV next to the home.

"It's the worst thing you could ever imagine," Melo said. "They didn't have any insurance or anything so we've got a GoFundMe started and the funeral home is taking donations."

Melo said she is also looking all over for a Scooby Doo blanket that she can bury Blayden.

Melo also said the community has been a blessing to her and her family since the fire

“We are doing everything that we can to get everything taken care of,” Melo said.

If you'd like to help the family, you can drop off donations at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home at 3321 Glynn Ave. or visit the family's GoFundMe page.
