Troopers identify motorcyclist killed in crash at U.S. 17 at Pages Dairy in Yulee

Family says Gordon Songer, the motorcyclist killed in a crash Monday, leaves behind two sons and a fiancée.

Troopers say charges are pending after a driver pulled into his path on U.S. 17 Monday morning.

Scott Pitts lives across the street from where the crash occurred. He said he heard it while he was waiting for his ride to work. He called 911 around 6:20 a.m.

“I heard the guy on the motorcycle hit on the gas real hard and changed a few gears,” Pitts said. “Then seen him hit the side of the van. When he hit the van he bounced off. When I ran to him, a car driving northbound to southbound hit him.”

Pitts and a couple other people who ran over said they used a tire jack to lift the car off of the victim.

“We got the car up the best we could and called 911,” Pitts said “They got here within a few minutes and told us there was nothing he could do by the time we could do anything.”

A Gofundme page has been started to support Songer's family during this time.

“It’s hard to get something like that out of your head,” Pitts said. “But there was a lot of good people out that helped and brought jacks over there and trying to do whatever until we realized there was nothing nobody can do. So a lot of good people coming together to try and help this man out.”

According to an FHP report, a 2005 Chevy van driven by Eric Siegel, 64 of Pennsylvania, was pulling out of a private driveway onto U.S. 17 northbound just before 6:30 a.m.

The driver was trying to cross the roadway to make a U-turn onto southbound U.S. 17, troopers said.

Troopers say Songer was riding his bike northbound toward the private drive when the van pulled into his path.

Songer was ejected when the van hit his bike. He landed in the right southbound lane of U.S. 17, where he was hit by a car, according to the FHP report.

Songer was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, according to the report.

Neither of the other drivers involved in the crash were injured, the report says. Charges are pending the investigation.
