Nassau County Animal Services seeing 'explosion' in number of animals dumped on side of road

Dozens of animals have been dumped on the side of the road and in Nassau County, this problem has drastically increased just this week alone.

“This week was just an explosion," Nassau County Animal Services Director Timothy Maguire said.

Right now, Maguire said they have more than 90 dogs -- and nearly 25 of those animals were dumped on the side of the road this week alone.

"People don't care for animals as much as they do for people," Maguire said.

A dog was found dumped on the road and five kittens were found in an old diaper box covered in ants.

“I was heartbroken that somebody would do that. I mean, they’re little kittens, why throw them out? Take them to a shelter or something,” neighbor April Meeks said.

But it’s not just Nassau County that’s experiencing this problem.

"I think it's pretty much everywhere. I constantly see Duval bursting at the seams," Maguire said.

In Duval County, Animal Care and Protective Services has taken in 318 animals within the past week, with close to 300 of them being strays.

And 102 animals have come into Clay County Animal Care and Control within four days.

"These are animals that have been thrown away like trash," Cat Angels Inc. Director Nancy Douglas said.

Maguire said it comes down to educating the public and he said more laws to protect animals are in the works.

"It's a problem. I don't see it getting much better," Maguire said.

The next big adoption event is in October at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds.
