Nassau County Sheriff says military ordnance found near two schools

A bomb squad had to be called in after a military ordnance was discovered near two schools in Nassau County.

The bomb was found by a construction crew working in the area. The incident happened just as Nassau County schoolchildren were returning to school from Christmas break.

A source told Action News Jax that the bomb was a World War II-era ordinance and that a team from Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay traveled to Nassau County to assist in its removal.

Chopper video showed heavy traffic as portions of State Road 200 in Yulee were closed due to activity.

The Nassau County Sheriff's office tweeted that the roads began reopening at 11:13 a.m.

Action News Jax reporter Deanna Bettineschi is on the scene and will have the latest on CBS47 at Noon and CBS47 at 5.
