Neighbors concerned about health, safety after continued flooding in St. Augustine neighborhood

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Residents off Winton Circle are fed up.

After experiencing years of flooding problems, they shared  their stories with county commissioners Tuesday morning.

Sue Bergeron and Michael Clark say the flooding on their streets has been even worse after Hurricane Irma, a nor'easter and Monday night's rain.

“The swamp is draining out in that direction. (It) Comes down, circles the cul-de-sac and tries to exit the ditch, and it does not,” Bergeron said.

Clark said his back yard looks like a swamp.

“The backyard is so squishy, you can’t walk in it,” Clark said.

This has created the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos

“They’re pretty bad in my yard,” Clark said.

"They have to act. This has become a safety hazard, a health risk," Bergeron said.

Bergeron said she’s seen snakes and leeches on her property.

We spoke with the public works director over the phone to ask what’s being done. He said a drainage task force is looking into options for these residents.

But neighbors say the only option is immediate action before the next big storm makes the flooding even worse.
