Neighbors on high alert after string of car burglaries in St. Johns County neighborhood

A St. Johns County neighborhood is on alert following a string of car burglaries.

Video given to Action News Jax shows people walking through the neighborhood casing cars early this morning.

Carolyn Andrews said she didn’t know someone had gone through her car until a deputy told her around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday that her car was one of several that had been rummaged through.

In exclusive video you can see someone walk up to a truck and try and open the door. Neighbors think this person is one of those responsible for burglarizing their cars early Tuesday morning.

“A deputy informed me that my car had been broke into. I guess it was the fifth or sixth car this morning,” Andrews said.

Andrews said she left her car unlocked but others say their cars were locked.

“It’s got the little remote. I just lock it before I go to bed and hang it up on the key ring. So it was definitely locked,” Rad Homrich said.

Homrich said when he left for work, he noticed his car door was open.

"Looked in, saw that the glove box had been opened up. The first aid kit was kind of strewn all over the place. And the center console had kind of been ruffled up as well," Homrich said.

In a 2016 Action News Jax Investigation, Anchor Tenikka Hughes found out that thieves are now using high-tech methods to break into cars -- in some cases, using equipment to transmit the same frequency as a key fob.

They can then try various codes until they find one that unlocks your car, an unnerving reality for neighbors.

"Someone is out there. Probably multiple people out there with this kind of potential is definitely, definitely nerve-racking," Homrich said.

If you think you recognize the people in the video or have other information on these crimes contact the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
