New breast mask eases pain for cancer patients

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It looks a lot like a jellyfish, but a new collagen breast mask is providing big relief for some women going through breast cancer radiation.

“I’ve had women literally buy the mask or have me offer them the mask. They go in the bathroom and put them on right underneath their clothes because they are just so tender,” said Spa Splurge owner Alia Hosch, who created the breast masks.

The slippery, gooey cooling mask started as a treatment for women who are breastfeeding, but Hosch quickly realized they could also provide relief to women going through breast radiation treatments.

“When you’re going through radiation therapy, it really is a burn site. And so it’s almost like a third-degree burn. It can blister. It can be red,” said Hosch.

She’s hoping to reach new breast cancer patients this weekend in Jacksonville. Her company is a sponsor for the 26.2 with Donna marathon, which raises money for women fighting breast cancer and research.

Breast cancer patients at the marathon will be able to sign up at her booth for a little relief.

“That is such a tough time in their lives and I really hope that my products can bring them some sort of relief,” said Hosch.

Hosch also spoke about her products this month to Jacksonville Mayo Clinic doctors who will be volunteering in the medical tent and first aid stations at this weekend’s marathon.

She’s hoping to start a partnership with hospitals around the country.
