New homes found for 12 dogs abandoned at North Jacksonville home

Twelve malnourished, neglected labs that were abandoned in Jacksonville home last month are healthy and on their way to new homes.

Back in January, our crew was at the North Jacksonville home which had been foreclosed, the person living there was evicted and left 13 of his dogs on the property.

Our cameras were rolling as rescue volunteers removed 12 dogs from the home. The 13th dog was found deceased underneath a shed in the backyard.

Those volunteers got the labs to SAFE Pet Rescue in St. Augustine.

Since then, they have received hundreds of calls about the dogs and 100 applications to adopt them.

SAFE Pet Rescue had it's work cut out for it. The labs needed a lot of veterinary attention.

"With the staff having to work with them and all their shots, close to 3,000," said Carol Mussoline, with SAFE.

That's not even including being spayed or neutered; those services were donated to the group from No More Homeless Pets.

Many of the dogs had mites, fleas, and one needed surgery for a leg injury, which cost $1,000.

Marcia Byles was at their location in Hollister Friday to pick up one of the female labs from the group.

"When I saw the story and heard about these poor pups, we wanted to see if we could adopt one," said Byles.

She said she has been looking for a dog for a while and is happy that she was able to adopt one of the 12 that were abandoned.

All of the dogs have been adopted and will be placed in their new homes this weekend.

Byles was able to take her new lab home to St. Augustine Friday.

"We have a fenced in yard with a pool so she might take a little dip in the pool," said Byles.
