Northside event aims to end violence

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The community gathered for an event called I am Northside Love on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Neighbors, family and friends gathered at Lonnie Miller Park to take a stand against the violence that seems to claim the lives of young men all too often. Participants said it will take more men getting involved to help decrease the violence.

The Northside Love campaign aims to raise awareness to decrease the violence and embrace positivitiy. The event included Northside LOVE, Teen Leaders of America, Local Leaders, McGowan Spinal Rehabilitation Center and local businesses.

“I knew this mother had just lost a son just last year and matter of fact yesterday when they sentenced the young man was the same day that her second baby son died,” said Linda Dayson, Hurting Families volunteer.

Men and women alike say it will take a collaborative effort to truly decrease the number of fatal shootings, and change the reality and reputation of the Northside.

This was the second year for the event and organizers say they are planning to have a third event next year.
