Officials identify two women hit, killed by train while crossing tracks in St. Augustine

Loved ones are remembering the local mother they said was killed Wednesday trying to save another woman from a train.

Robert Danford said for the first time in seven years he’s being forced to picture a live without his girlfriend Christine Griggs.

According to investigators the 46-year-old was crossing the tracks with 55-year-old Jacqueline McCleary when both were hit by a train.

Danford told Action News Jax, “She was just, she’s my heart I love her more than anything.”

Danford and his mother returned to the scene near US-1 and Lewis Speedway in St.Augustine, Thursday.

He described, “You’re my heart and my soul and I love you more than anything. I can’t believe this happened I don’t know how to go on without you.”

According to Danford, the mother of four was attempting to help McCleary who had stumbled on the gravel around the tracks, when the train came.

He said, “I know in my heart that she was just doing her best to save and help somebody that needed her help.”

Danford said that’s helping him cope with this loss.

He explained, “I’ll do my best to be strong for you and to honor your memory.”
