Officials offer free smoke detectors after 5 house fires in 1 month in Lake City

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — Columbia County Fire & Rescue is warning people about the dangers of not having a working smoke detector.

There have been five residential fires in the last month in Lake City. That’s two more than in June 2014.

Fire rescue officials say the causes of the fires have been different, but they have noticed several non-functional smoke detectors.

Firefighters will provide and install smoke detectors in the homes of people who cannot afford them.

If you have purchased a smoke detector and have trouble installing it, firefighters will install it for free.

You can reach Columbia County Fire Rescue Life Safety Services at 386-754-2120.
