One dead in crash involving multiple teens on Oakleaf Village Parkway, JSO says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE: The teens were suspected to have been racing in excessive speeds, JSO says. The driver, 16, who was killed, hit a tree and snapped the tree in half.

Two other passengers were transported with serious injuries. The Sheriff's Office is now looking for a description of other cars that were racing.

"At first, I had a little bit of panic because my oldest nephew just started driving this year -- 16, brand new driver, so of course your heart sinks when you hear a fatality, especially with a teen," said a woman who lives nearby.

She said, "It was just concerning in that there is a whole lot of speeding in this area and it's something that needs to be a little more enforced."

The vehicle(s) racing are believed to have been leaving Oakleaf High School when the crash happened.

Here is a statement from the Clay County School District:

"We are deeply saddened to learn that a junior at Oakleaf High School has passed away due to a car accident in the Oakleaf community this afternoon. It has been confirmed that two other students were in the vehicle as well and both have suffered serious injuries. The District will provide grief counseling services at Oakleaf High School's campus beginning tomorrow to support students, staff and family members during this very difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones. Our entire school district is saddened by this devastating news.  Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers as we work through the pain and emotions of this tragic loss."
