Multiple agencies investigating deadly deputy-involved shooting

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Officials are investigating a deadly police-involved shooting in the Crossings at Cypress Trace subdivision in St. Johns County on Sunday.

St. Johns County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to a domestic dispute around 9 p.m. at 901 Black Cherry Drive, near Race Track Road. A man was trying to get into his estranged wife’s home through a window, deputies say.

When deputies arrived, they say there was a confrontation, which resulted in a deputy firing his gun and killing the man.

“One of our deputies approached this individual, who was attempting to go through the front window of the residence. At this point in time there was a confrontation between the two, and the deputy did in fact fire and the individual is deceased now at the front of this residence,” said SJCSO spokesman Chuck Mulligan.

Deputies believe the man had something in his hand at the time of the confrontation.

“At this point in time there's information that he had something in his hand. We've not confirmed what that may be yet,” said Mulligan.

Neighbors told Action News they heard about four or five shots fired.

The sheriff's office is getting a search warrant for the home.

Both the names of the suspect and deputy involved will be released as soon as next of kin is notified.

Deputies with the SJCSO Major Crimes Unit and the 7th Circuit State Attorney's Office are investigating the deadly shooting. More information on the incident is expected to be released Monday.
