Overturned garbage truck totals two parked cars, damages another on Southside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Around 11 a.m. the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department responded to the 8000 block of Western Way near Baymeadows Road after a dump truck flipped right onto two parked cars and damaged a third.

No was injured, but the crash caused a big mess, including a hydraulic fluid leak.

Monday was Jennifer Stracka’s husband’s first day at his new job when he called to tell her what happened to their silver Honda, only months from paying it off.

But she’s looking on the bright side.

“Happy Mother’s Day, I’m getting a new car,” said Stracka.

The hazmat team was at the scene because of the hydraulic fluid leak. City environmental works showed up to clean up the leak.

The fire chief said the dump truck driver was on his way to get fuel when the weight shifted during the turn and he tipped over.

“My daughter wasn’t in it, he wasn’t in it, so there you go, nobody was hurt -- that’s the good news,” said Stracka.

The dump truck was eventually righted as several people left their offices and looked on.

According to Stracka, the driver of the dump truck works for Republic Services.

Action News Jax reached out to Republic for comment, but a spokesperson sent us a short statement:

“We are cooperating fully with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office as part of their ongoing investigation. At this time, we are referring all inquiries to the Sheriff’s Office.”
