Parents of toddler found wandering alone arrested, Nassau deputies say

The parents of a 3-year-old girl who Nassau deputies said was found wandering alone Monday afternoon have been arrested.

According to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, the girl was found barefoot in the middle of Miner Road.

The toddler had a soiled diaper and strong smell of feces, NCSO said.

A school bus driver, Kathy Frederick, told deputies she took the child to Yulee Middle School after she found her in the road.

Deputies were able to locate the girl's parents after going door-to-door along Miner Road.

Inside the home, they also found an 8-month-old with a soiled diaper.

The child's mother, Nina Whorton, 23, told deputies she last saw her daughter earlier that morning and went to sleep and woke up about 3 p.m.

The father, Austin Philman, 23, said he was also sleeping and thought Nina was taking care of the children.

The parents were arrested and face child neglect charges.

The Department of Children & Families is investigating.
