People brave Memorial Day weekend heat for outdoor fun

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Earlier this week the First Alert Weather team alerted you to the hottest Memorial Day weekend in more than a decade, with temperatures reaching as high as 96 on Saturday.

TRENDING:

The First Alert Weather team says temperatures are forecast to reach 99 on Monday.

Many braved the heat to head to the beaches and the annual Jacksonville Jazz Festival on Saturday.

“Definitely paying attention to the forecast and scheduling my day around the temperatures,” said festival attendee Liz Peña.

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority took to Twitter to let people know about their buses that turned into downtown cooling stations.

“Actually it’s pretty good because I just walked down to the courthouse, and then back, and then back to the courthouse,” festival attendee Charlene West said. “And then on the way back I decided it was time to cool off. It’s a good thing to have.”

At last word from JSO, there were eight calls for medical service at the festival on Saturday. But no one was taken to the hospital and there were no obvious heat-related illnesses.
