Local mother shot by son improving at hospital

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — The mother who was accidentally shot by her 4-year old son is still in the hospital.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Jamie Gilt, 31, was too heavily medicated to speak to investigators. However, they say she remains in the hospital and is improving.

Gilt was shot in the back on March 8 by her son while she driving on the highway. The boy was in the backseat when he somehow got a hold of her gun, deputies said.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is looking into the incident.

Putnam County deputies said charges could be filed against her for leaving a gun where her son could get to it.
