JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 10-year-old girl is recovering from a gunshot wound.
Police said the girl was shot in the leg on Rogero Road, just south of Merrill Road, Monday evening.
A family member at the home Tuesday afternoon declined to speak on camera, but told Action News the girl was still in the hospital.
According to the incident report, the girl's mother told police she heard a pop and went outside to investigate. That's when she saw her daughter laying on the ground a few houses down the street with a gunshot wound to her leg.
The mother said she couldn't get through to 911 and decided to take her daughter to Memorial Hospital. A Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesperson told Action News the mother's cellphone did not have a strong enough signal to make a call.
An ambulance later took the girl to Shands.
JSO still is not releasing any information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Investigators have not said whether the child was targeted or whether the shooting was accidental. They have not named any suspects.
A spokesperson for the Department of Children and Families said the agency is now investigating.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
