Driver charged with hitting overpass at Emerson & I-95

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol charged a truck driver with exceeding the height limitation after debris from his truck struck the underside of an overpass on Emerson Street at Interstate 95 Wednesday afternoon.

The impact ripped off the back door of the truck, sending debris into the road.

Engineers with the Florida Department of Transportation said the impact caused minor damage to the structure but nothing major.

An inspector told Action News reporter Amanda Warford (@AmandaANjax) he does not expect the need for any emergency repairs.

The trucking company is Columbia Salvage.  Authorities said it was overloaded with scraps.

Authorities blocked one lane of Emerson Street to give crews space to clean up the debris.

The driver, 53-year-old David Robert Stamper, is from Lake City.

Action News checked the incident history of Columbia Salvage.  The company has zero incidents to report in the last two years.
