'Sick people' are killing ducks in Columbia County, man says

More than a dozen ducks were found dead near Lake Desoto in Lake City.

It was a gruesome sight for Greg Hall.

"There were dead ducks everywhere," Hall said.

Hall takes his 7-year-old daughter to Lake Desoto every morning to see the ducks.

"She likes feeding the ducks, she doesn't want to see dead bloody ones," Hall said.

Hall says the remains of several ducks were scattered over the road. And he believes someone intentionally killed him. He noticed six of them were lined up in a row here along the road.

"Their heads [were] mashed in laying over the curb," Hall said.

This isn't the first time this lake has been in the news. Last spring, we reported as many as 700 dead fish were found floating on the surface. At the time, Florida Fish and Wildlife said the massive die-off appeared to be because of low levels of oxygen in the water, partially because of a sudden rise in temperature.

"It looks like somebody ran around with a baseball bat and just whacked them with whatever they could get," Hall says.

Meanwhile, other people have their opinions.

"Someone is after these ducks, because no one accidentally hits 11-plus ducks. These are just ducks minding their own business, and people are out killing them," one woman, who didn't want to give her name, said.

According to a police report, police investigated, but since no one saw what happened, no further actions were taken. But if someone did do this intentionally, they could face up to a year in jail, and be fined $5,000.

"There are some sick people killing innocent ducks," Hall says.
