Sister of bicyclist hit, killed in Oceanway on Halloween night: 'They took my best friend from me'

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Family and friends gathered near Shane Reed’s memorial in Oceanway, where balloons and a cross now stand.

Reed's family said he was hit and killed by a driver while riding his bike near Spaulding and Cole roads Halloween night.

Now they’re desperately searching for answers and want his killer to be found.

“He’s never going to get to hold my child, he didn’t even have a chance to have kids,” Reed's sister Ashley Johnson said.

The family said the last month has been hard for them, and it’s going to be even more painful without him here for Thanksgiving.

“Honestly, every day, it’s a struggle knowing that he’s never coming back, like, I’m never going to get to spend the holidays with him,” Johnson said.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said there have been six bicyclist-vs.-vehicle fatalities so far this year.

The family said there haven’t been any leads.

“It’s hard. We all struggle every day,” family friend Danielle Jackson said. “We’re all just trying to be here for each other. That’s all we can do at this point."

His sister said she has a message for the killer.

“They took my best friend from me and I’m never going to get that back,” Johnson said.
