St. Johns County woman finds out Lawrence Taylor's Super Bowl 'ring' is fake

A St. Johns County woman thought she found an authentic Super Bowl ring on a bathroom sink of a storage facility in St. Augustine.

Except it wasn’t.

It all started at the CubeSmart in St. Johns County on Sunday, when a woman was going to her unit and made what she thought was a super discovery.

Virginia Fuger thought the ring was an authentic Super Bowl ring belonging to Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor.

“I had no idea what it's value was, or anything else,” Fuger said.

Instead, it’s worth $40.

Taylor was a dominating defensive force for the New York Giants in the 1980s and 1990s, winning two Super Bowl titles. The design from 1991 includes Taylor's name, number , position and Giants logo.

A jeweler said the ring wasn’t even 14-carat gold.

According to to published reports, Taylor gave the real ring to his son T.J. in 2012. The younger Taylor sold it to an unknown buyer for $230,000, more than triple the expected price.
