Storage unit at Temple College Preparatory School destroyed by fire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A fire broke out Wednesday at a storage building belonging to the Temple College Preparatory School.

The Christian Private school is kindergarten through 12th-grade that is located at Fairfax and 17th streets.

There were about 40 students and teachers in the chapel behind the storage building when it caught fire. The group started to smell the fire burning next door and alerted officials.

The school was temporarily evacuated, according to the principal.

“We were finishing up our program, we sort of smelled something, that smelled like ashes or something, so I looked around the church and didn’t see anything, when I looked outside the door, I spotted the house next door just, smoke everywhere,” said principal Zelmer Gregory.

The fire was extinguished by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. The storage unit is destroyed.

Fire officials believe it may be electrical.

No one was injured.
